Put some of the room back into the mix

With wedges, the room is always around you. You hear the crowd, the PA, amplifiers, drums, stage reflections, and the physical energy of the venue whether all of that information is useful or not.

Start with a mix you can understand

Your first in-ear mix doesn't need every channel on the console.

Start with four things:

  • Your own voice. Enough to hear pitch, tone, phrasing, and dynamics clearly.
  • A pitch reference. Keys, guitar, tracks, another vocal, or whatever gives you the harmonic information you rely on.
  • A rhythmic reference. Click, kick, snare, percussion, tracks, or another dependable source of timing.
  • A sense of natural space. Enough reverb or ambience to keep you connected to the performance.

Then add other channels because they help you perform.

Give soundcheck a different job

When you're transitioning from wedges, soundcheck is where you build your new reference.

Don't spend the whole check asking whether everything is loud enough. Use the time to figure out what happens when the entire band is playing and your vocal has to find its place inside that mix.

  • Sing at real performance intensity. A lightly marked vocal doesn't tell you what your monitor mix will feel like when you're actually performing.
  • Check the hardest part of the set. Run a loud chorus, a high passage, a harmony-heavy section, or whatever normally exposes monitoring problems.
